Hey guys so I really want to do an exchange year in the US, its been my dream ever since I can imagine, but I am struggling with telling my parents about it. I don‘t know if they would accept the Idea of me being gone for a whole year. But its my DREAM. I don‘t really talk to my mom that often, and were never really that personal, so I dont know how I should approach her with this broad topic. Do you guys have any ideas? I feel like I would mess it up, I know 😭.
Ps I heard from this website from a friend, that past exchange students could give advice here, that would be great!! Thanks a lot already.
Hii—past exchange students speaking here… ( I did my exchange year last year, so DM me if you got any further questions) Okay so talking to your parents is like the first most important step to get your exchange year started. I know that it can be really scary and nervracking because you don‘t know how your parents will answer to this decision or how they will react. But that’s okay. Don’t worry about that for now. There are only so many things you can control and their reaction isn‘t one of them. I would really just talk to them both, maybe at the same time if that helps. That’s what I did, I even held a silly little presentation, to show them how important all of this is for me. Your parents will understand how important this is to you, and maybe it will take some time for them to accept it, but they will at some point. And then you’ll be glad that you asked them. I hope this helped!! Let me know how it works out!
